Hedgehog monitoring at Green Park

At Green Park we are monitoring our hedgehog population using mammal tunnels!

The tunnels have food, a mixture of vegetable oil and charcoal, and paper which means when the animals comes in to eat the food, they get the non-toxic oil mix on their paws then when they exit, they leave footprints which we then identify and can see if there are hedgehogs present in that area of the park.

Over the past few weeks, we have had a hedgehog sighting and hedgehog prints in one of our tunnels! Hedgehogs have very distinct footprints, the image below is from one of our tunnels.

Hedgehogs are a very illusive mammal and we do not know nearly enough about them. There is predicted to be less than 1 million in the UK so having a population on Green Park is fantastic.
