The Big Butterfly Count

18th of July - 8th of August
Green Park 12:00 - 14:00

The Big Butterfly Count is a UK-wide survey aimed at helping us assess the health of our environment simply by counting the amount and type of butterflies (and some days – flying moths) we see.

Between 18th July -8th August our Biodiversity Team will be completing a butterfly count at Green Park and you can join them. Meet the team before heading out around the Park. You’ll spend 20 minutes seeing what species you can identify and recording the details ready for our Biodiversity Team to submit to the Butterfly Conservation.

You can pick up a recording sheet from 100 Longwater Avenue reception which has a guide to species ID. Find a green space around Green Park to watch for butterflies for 20 minutes during lunchtime (between 12pm – 2pm) and keep a tally on the sheet of how many of each species you see! After finishing the count, please return your sheet to reception so that we can gather the results.

Why count butterflies?

Butterflies are beautiful creatures to be around and they are a vital part of the ecosystem as both pollinators and components of the food chain. However, they are under threat. Numbers of butterflies and moths in the UK have decreased significantly since the 1970s. This is a warning that cannot be ignored.
