We’ve spotted a long-tailed tit nest!

Two long-tailed tits have started building their home here at Green Park.

These beautiful birds are expert nest builders, collecting moss and spider webs to weave into a neat little pouch with a single entrance and exit hole, and once the shell is complete they line the inside with feathers to make it nice and cosy, collecting them from the surrounding area.

The nest starts off small and compact for when the female lays eggs, which will normally be between 8 and 12 and as the eggs hatch, and the young begin to grow, the nest will expand to accommodate this. This amazing nest will allow up to 12 chicks and the parent birds to stay in the nest until they are ready to fledge.

We’ll be keeping an eye out and have our fingers crossed that the pair who created this lovely little nest will soon start to lay!
